Our vision for learning is to enable all children to achieve their full potential through an enjoyable, imaginative, creative and challenging curriculum,using focused and differentiated planning, practical activities and development of independence.
The school’s curriculum provides memorable experiences including regular off site visits providing rich opportunities for high quality learning and wider personal development and well-being. Our school is at the forefront of successful, innovative curriculum design to ensure learners can make rapid progress with their learning. Initiatives such as Philosophy For Children are firmly embedded, helping learners to use higher level thinking skills and improved communication.
We follow the Foundation Stage Curriculum in Reception and the National Curriculum for Years 1– 6. We utilise the Letters And Sounds Scheme to teach phonics throughout EYFS and KS1. For individual readers we have the Oxford Reading Tree Scheme (Oxford University Press) and for guided reading we use Project X (OUP). For those children in KS2 who may need extra help with reading/phonics we use the Project X Code Intervention (OUP).
Our Schemes of Work for Maths, English and Science have been written in collaboration with St Thomas’ Moorside and our literacy and numeracy consultants, encompassing the New National Curriculum. Our topic-based approach to Science and all the foundation subjects provides an engaging, motivating, practical, question based curriculum, based on learning challenges with an overarching question for each topic. (see class topics below). Where possible, children are given first hand experiences to enhance their learning through educational visits or visitors / workshops in school.
A new computing curriculum has been put in place and new IT equipment in school includes: i-pads and netbooks in classrooms and a 3D printer, control resources and ‘green screen’ technologies in the school’s Media Suite. Music is taught by a specialist teacher in line with the new curriculum and the Greater Manchester Hub scheme of work. Weekly instrumental music lessons are currently offered to children in Years 3-6 on violin, cello, flute, clarinet, cornet and tenor horn. The school has an orchestra, KS2 choir and brass group. A specialist sports coach has been employed to work in school to deliver high quality physical education lessons and write a new scheme of work. He also delivers Adventurous Activities including orienteering, climbing wall and trampoline to upper KS2 pupils and after school sports activities for all children. We have extended our MFL (French) provision to 45 minute lessons for all KS2 classes. These are delivered by our HLTA who has worked alongside our specialist French teacher to devise our MFL scheme of work.
Our school uses the Manchester Diocesan syllabus for RE, which develops knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith and allows us to explore and appreciate other faiths, traditions and beliefs.
In line with the requirements of the Education Reform Act, our children take part in a daily assembly. This includes acts of Christian worship such as prayers and hymns. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from R.E. and worship. This should be discussed with the Executive Headteacher.
